The Story:
O. Henry's story, "The Gift of the Magi," tells of a poor, newly married couple, Jim and Della Young. They sell their most prized possessions, his gold pocket watch and her long beaurtiful hair, to buy each other Christmas presents.
The affecting "surprise" ending is, by now, famous: Jim is given a fob for the watch he no longer possesses and Della receives a set of combs for her shorn tresses.
O. Henry likens the wisdom of their sacrifices for such "useless" gifts to the wisdom of the Magi who brought presents to the Babe in the manger.
